Earn a MHS in Addictions Studies - Addictions Counseling Concentration

Governors State University is pleased to offer an exceptional new program from our Addictions Studies and Behavioral Health Department.  The 60-hour program is a Master of Health Science in Addictions Studies - Addictions Counseling Concentration and is open to students who are currently in the MHS in Addictions Studies program.  In addition, eligible students must have already achieved candidacy status, must not have a grade of “C” or less in any of their core classes, and maintained a G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher in all of their completed core courses.

This new program is designed to view addictions not only from strictly a substance abuse perspective.  We now understand that addiction is very often tied into other disorders, such as depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Our students will be exposed to all of the latest evidence-based research and a range of established clinical theories such Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, among others.  All of our graduates are fully prepared to provide the best possible clinical outcomes for their clients.

Job growth for careers as substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors are expected to increase by 27 percent between the years of 2010 to 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  All candidates will need to obtain three letters of recommendation as part of the application process. The letters may be included in your packet or mailed directly to the Department of Addictions Studies and Behavioral Health in a signed and sealed envelope.  See our website to learn more about the complete program requirements.
